My name is Caitlin Healy and I'm honored to accept Photographers Without Borders' assignment to travel to eastern Uganda in January 2015 to capture the work of a small but mighty charity called AIDS Resistance Trust (ARTUganda.) Your support is greatly appreciated as I fundraise for this very special cause.
My assignment is to document ARTUganda’s HIV/AIDS youth outreach and women’s empowerment projects. The media I produce will advance their goal of building healthy communities.
ABOUT ARTUganda
ARTUganda is a community-based organization founded by five Ugandan professors in 2008 who became concerned with the devastating impact of HIV/AIDS on the Mt. Elgon region of eastern Uganda.
The HIV rate hovers above the national average at 9% among the estimated population of 278,500 in the Kapchorwa, Kween and Bukwo districts where ARTUganda focuses on:
- HIV/AIDS care, support and prevention
- HIV/AIDS related stigma and discrimination
- Gender and gender-based violence
- Orphan and vulnerable child support
ABOUT THE PHOTOGRAPHER
I’m Caitlin Healy, an independent documentary photographer and filmmaker based in Dakar. I've served as a U.S. Peace Corps Volunteer in Senegal since 2011.
While living in the small town of Guinguineo, my home for two years, I learned Wolof and was welcomed into a loving family who redefined my sense of community. Inspired by the women’s groups I worked with and my host mother, I began shooting an interview-based maternal health documentary last year called "The Yaay Project: Motherhood in Senegal."
This will be my first trip to East Africa. I’m honored to have the opportunity to tell ARTUganda’s story.

Photographers Without Borders matches small charities and NGOs worldwide with visual storytellers who use their lens to bring a cause into focus. I'll be offering my services to ARTUganda completely free of charge.
