Happy Hearts is launching a revolutionary project to build the first known public playground and community center in South Central Somalia. This will provide a safe place for children and adults from surrounding communities to gather, play and connect. The community center will offer access to education, counseling, and play. It will facilitate creative workshops to promote intellectual and emotional health through the simple power of creativity and fun.
Play is vitally important to optimal child development; in fact it has been recognized by the United Nations High Commission for Human Rights as a right of every child. This birthright is challenged by forces such as war and violence, and the limited resources available to those living in poverty. Happy Hearts prioritizes play so that children can express their feelings, develop their cognitive functionality, find healing from trauma and most of all experience fun in a non-threatening environment.
Given the importance of play in the development of a child, any space which provides children with the opportunity to freely experience play in a safe environment should be seen as crucial. Happy Hearts hopes this will be the first of many safe play areas in Somalia and other war torn and disaster struck places around the world!
