Thank you for coming to my fundraising web page. I am fundraising for a project with Photographers Without Borders (www.photographerswithoutborders.org) and Peruvian Hearts (www.peruvianhearts.org).
I will be heading to Cusco, Peru in March of 2014 to document the great work being done by Peruvian Hearts with children living in extreme poverty through improved education, nutrition and health care.
My job will be to provide professional quality images to the organization to tell stories of the children of Cusco and work Peruvian Hearts does thats make the world a better place. In sharing these stories my aim to help move, motivate, inspire and educate others.
But, I need your help. To offset the program fees, airfare and other expenses, including a financial gift to Peruvian Hearts, my goal is to raise $5000. I'm off to a great start (thank you early donators!), but I still have a ways to go. Whether it's a gift of $5 or $500, your donation helps to provide the funding necessary to continue and to expand this important project.
Please take a few moments and give what you can. You'll be doing not only a simple act of kindness, but helping make the world a better place.
Below is some information on the organizations involved. Please get in touch with myself (thomas@thomasduncan.ca) or either organization for further information.
In advance, I thank you.
With gratitude,
Thomas Duncan
PERUVIAN HEARTS
Peruvian Hearts was founded in 2003 by 11 year-old, Ana Dodson. Ana was adopted as a baby from Cusco, Peru in 1992. After returning to Peru for the first time in 2003, Ana was moved by the extreme poverty she saw and in an effort to help the children of Peru, she decided to start Peruvian Hearts. Peruvian Hearts is a United States based public charity that is registered under IRS guidelines as a 501(c)(3) organization. Peruvian Hearts is headquartered in Golden, Colorado.
Their Mission:
Peruvian Hearts believes in the dignity and value of every child, and works to transform the lives of orphans and other children living in poverty in Peru through improved education, nutrition, and health care.
Concurrent with our primary mission, Peruvian Hearts also strives to educate youth around the world about the importance and values of giving back and inspire them to become involved in service and philanthropy.
ABOUT THE PHOTOGRAPHER
Thomas Duncan is a photographer based in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada, but works worldwide.
Thomas was born in Sudbury, but has lived and traveled extensively throughout the world. Educated at the University of British Columbia in beautiful Vancouver, British Columbia, his love of photography began when his father gave him his first 35 mm camera at the age of 18 when Thomas decided Belfast, Northern Ireland in the late 1980s would be a great first solo trip abroad.
The trip left an indelible mark on Thomas and his photography from that time - photographing the lives and surroundings of those living in impoverished West Belfast - began a love affair of documenting the human condition for social change that continues to this day.
“I knew from my very first day in Belfast that I wasn’t interested so much in photographing the sites and landmarks of the city, but rather the people — where they lived and how they lived — and under very different conditions that I was used to in my middle-class Canadian world. I had machine guns pointed at me for no reason other than I was walking down a street while and I watched as little old grannies trudged along with their groceries having to suffer the indignity of having the same done to them. Even at eighteen and from a very affluent and inclusive society it seemed dreadfully wrong. I thought no one back home would believe what I was seeing so I took pictures of everything I could. “ — Thomas Duncan
Upon his return from Belfast, his love of photography continued throughout his public relations career with a globally-recognized international airline, winning his first national photo competition in 1999 for a night portrait of a Parisienne street in the suburbs. While not yet pursuing photography full-time, Thomas continued honing his skills right through the digital revolution of photography. Thomas took the plunge into the world of digital photography, promptly winning awards for his work.
Thomas has had his work featured by imaging industry leaders such as F.J. Westcott and Canon. His work has been published in newspapers, magazines, brochures, corporate reports and has been reproduced and hung in homes, offices and restaurants throughout the world.
Thomas continues to develop his talents, now moving into the world of studio and bridal work along side his editorial, event, sport, landscape and portraiture work. Most recently Thomas returned from Europe where he shot in Belgium, Finland, Estonia and in Poland, where he visited and shot extensively at the notorious Auschwitz Concentration Camp, the former Jewish Ghetto of Krakow and the famed Schindler Enamelware Factory.
Always looking for ways to make a difference, Thomas volunteers his time at a wide variety of projects such as coaching, teaching, and sitting on the Board of Directors of not-for-profit organizations.
Thomas is thrilled to be partnering with Photographers Without Borders and Peruvian Hearts, helping to change lives and attitudes - one frame at a time.
