ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION

Proyecto Horizonte began its work in 2004 as a privately funded organization.  Our goal was to lift the community we serve out of extreme poverty and help it to thrive.  We know that this cannot be done without involving them in everything we do.  Our comprehensive program integrates education, healthcare and community development to create a sustainable, positive impact.  This has helped us to achieve remarkable success.  100% of donations directly benefit the project.  We receive some support from local government, but the majority of our costs are covered through private donations.

WHAT THEY DO

Healthcare:  Our Health Center provides medical care and advice to those in need in the community.  The team consists of six professionals: two doctors, two dentists, two registered nurses, a biochemist and an assistant that are all committed to reducing serious and preventable illnesses in the community.  Our facilities include a basic diagnostic laboratory, two consulting rooms, a dentist’s surgery (with two chairs and x-ray machine), a vaccinations room, tuberculosis treatment room and a pharmacy.  We currently care for about 100 patients per day.

Education:  We aim to offer the best possible education for children and adults.  Starting with the very young, we provide a safe learning environment for all.

Our kindergarten aims to give the children of Ushpa-Ushpa the best start possible.  We provide a safe and fun learning environment for over 180 one to six-year-olds every weekday.  Each class is taught by an early years specialist, supported by one or two assistants from within the community and our educational psychologist.  Children who are behind in their development or have learning difficulties work with the psychologist to ensure they are not left behind.

Our school helps the children of Ushpa-Ushpa to become adults with a bright future. 630 children aged six to 16 years attend our school, where they have the chance of graduating and gaining the Bolivian high school diploma, the Bachillerato.  We offer morning and afternoon classes for 12 grades with permanent teachers for grades one to six and specialized teachers for the elder classes in mathematics, natural sciences, literature, social sciences, English, Quechua, ethics, music, crafts and sports.

Our evening school gives education to adults who missed out on school as children. The CEA-CETHA system leads to a university-recognized high school diploma within five years. Basic numeracy and literacy are not required to enter.  Our teaching methods are highly interactive and are adapted to suit students’ existing education and knowledge. The residents of Ushpa-Ushpa have enthusiastically embraced the initiative. For many, gaining the diploma, which is the only recognized high school accreditation in Bolivia, is a dream realized.  Our 60 current participants, the majority of whom are women, are aged between 16 and 62. We have had a graduating class each year since 2008.

Local Development:  This area was formed in 2012 and is the combination of programs and volunteer initiatives that were previously in existence and new programs that will be designed to continue meeting the needs of the community.  This allows these programmes to be designed and managed in a coordinated and sustainable manner.

The area is divided into four components of Community Training, Violence Prevention, Sport and Art and Housing and Work Programs.

ABOUT THE CHARITY

The charity aims to provide a structured development approach to support the community in its efforts towards poverty alleviation for the members of the community.  Their comprehensive program integrates education, healthcare and community development to create sustainable, positive impact.  They have a strong team experienced in their diverse activities working with honesty and respect, and a network consisting of international volunteers, universities and specialized not for profit organizations.  They are a physical platform (in the community) and virtual (internet) for initiatives and projects that contribute to the common goal, generating significant synergies with all involved.

PROJECT DETAILS

Tim will be expected to document and provide images that focus on growing up in the community, as well as the charities three working areas (Health, Education and Community Development).  The organization would like to showcase their impact and the living situation for the families and the community.
