Hello!  My name is Rachel Kulchin and I am so excited. A few weeks ago, I was honored to learn that I have been selected for an opportunity to work with Photographers Without Borders to photograph the important and inspiring work that Youth Alive Uganda does in Kampala.

Uganda is a country of young people – the median age is 15 years old and the average Ugandan woman has six children. Since 1993, Youth Alive Uganda has been working with children, adolescents and young adults to provide counseling and training in life skills to empower youth and open doors to new opportunities.

My task is to capture the ways in which their curriculum  provides youth with information about the risks of irresponsible health behaviors, facilitating positive peer groups and implementing life skill programs. Youth Alive Uganda also promotes youth involvement in agriculture believing it is a sustainable option to local young people.

Of all the international assignments available with Photographers Without Borders, this opportunity caught my eye.  I am a farmer by trade; I firmly believe in the power of agriculture as not only a sustainable business option for our future generations, but that working directly with the land cultivates a lifestyle that promotes healthy behaviors, builds strong communities and develops important life skills. Having worked with youth throughout my life, I am passionate about the value of how these skills contribute to the success of a person. It will be an honor to use my photographs to tell this story and support the important work this charity does for youth in Kampala.

My photographs will be used to supply Youth Alive Uganda with images that will be used to raise awareness and promote education. My service is offered cost free to Youth Alive Uganda and they will be given all the images royalty-free, unlimited term license to use as necessary to promote their cause.

I am so excited to take part in this adventure but I need your help! This is a 100% volunteer trip and fully self-funded. The estimated cost is about $4,000.00 to cover airfare, visas, health coverage, travel insurance, transportation, program fees, and vaccinations.  All donations are tax-deductible with any surplus funds going directly to Youth Alive Uganda.

I am grateful for any support you are able to provide.

If you have anyone you can think of who would be interested in promoting the cause please feel free to pass it along!

Thank you so much.

All the best to you.

Rachel Kulchin
