I am writing to share with you the latest project the Frenchtown School is hoping accomplish. We have been improving our outdoor facilities in three phases and Phase I is complete. We have put underground sprinklers on the football field and removed the old long jump/triple jump track from the field, to keep our football players safer. We no longer need to drag irrigation pipe across the track. Not only was this ruining the surface, we couldn’t control the massive amounts of water irrigating the field, which was ruining the sub-surface as well.
Phase II, Track Matters, is the next priority. Champion Mill and private donors funded our current track, which was over 30 years ago. We have patched patches, repaired repairs and it must be re-surfaced. We need to raise an additional $100,000 to re-surface the track, construct the 3 new long jump/triple jump runways, discus rings and improve the surrounding area. An Eagle Scout is spearheading the wonderful jumping project, and donating all the labor.
Phase III, the final priority, will consist of constructing a concessions/restroom complex for the soccer and softball fields; putting in a soccer scoreboard and repairing the leaky concessions roof and the associated problems with water damage.
Track is a sport that all students can participate. It is the only opportunity for some students to belong to a team, experience a sense of camaraderie and the spirit of competition. It is a sport that builds on and strengthens athletes for other sports. It keeps students active and busy in a rural community. Track is a life long sport. Frenchtown had 85 out of 389 (22%) high school students and 82 out of 189 (43%) junior high school students participate in track and field in 2012. This is an extremely impressive showing.
Some points of interest about the Frenchtown School District:
• 43% of our student population qualifies for ‘free or reduced-fee’ meals (family of 4 must make less than $42,000/year).
• 25% of our tax base was lost with the bankruptcy of Smurfit-Stone container (not to mention their generosity and loss of approximately 100 students moving from the area).
• We employ the fewest number of administrators for a Class A school.
• We have the highest graduation rate of 94% in the state, of all Class A schools.
• Academically, across all grades, we have one of the highest scoring schools in the state.
