Because of the unique relationship STOP CANCER enjoys with UCLA’s Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center, the $25,000 Seed Grant will be matched in-kind thereby doubling the value of this grant. Dr. Isaac Yang is a neurosurgeon specializing in the surgical treatment and clinical outcomes of adult brain and spinal cord tumors at UCLA with an emphasis on acoustic neuromas, skull base tumors and state of the art, intra-operative brain motor and neurophysiologic mapping to safely maximize tumor resection.
As a principal investigator at the UCLA Brain Tumor Program, his extensive research interests include optimizing brain tumor clinical outcomes, novel nanoparticles against brain tumors and experimental glioblastoma therapies like brain tumor vaccines. Yang is collaborating with the UCLA NanoSystems Institute to utilize novel nanoparticles in cutting edge use of nanoparticles for potential brain tumor treatments and immunotherapy. In addition to his basic science research, Yang conducts research efforts into brain tumor outcomes of patients with brain tumors seeking to maximize safe and effective treatments for patients with brain tumors.

Jason Dessel, a senior computer engineer at NBC Universal, was also a gifted photographer, artist and an Engineering and MBA graduate. He loved hiking and photography, music and art. He was a devoted husband, a caring big brother, and the best kind of friend. People called him a hero. Many people described him as a genius. He was filled with creativity and inspired others with his tireless will to beat cancer and his ability to notice and appreciate the simple gifts life has to offer-- an outdoor cafe, or a great meal with friends. He had the biggest heart and a unique way of making everyone feel special when they were around him. No matter how sick he got, he could always be counted on for a laugh, with his sharp wit and quirky sense of humor. He could beat anyone at scrabble. Jason, passed away on May 7, 2011, after a long and courageous fight against brain cancer. He always had the dream of helping people fight this terrible disease. The Jason Dessel Fund at STOP CANCER was established to fulfill this dream.
