We are Max's Family: Andy, Melis, Hannah and Nicky.
Five years ago, on August 31 2008, Max passed away after battling cancer for four years... he was only 7 years old. Our family life revolved around cancer treatments and sickness, but we always made room to live life to the Max.
Since losing Max, we have made it our goal to raise awareness and funding for childhood cancer research, in hopes that other families and children will not have to experience the heartbreak of losing a child, a friend, a sibling - and, of course, that no more children will have to battle cancer.
We support the work of good doctors who are immersed in creating relevant clinical trials that can be brought to the bedside now - not ten years from now.
Nicky was not quite three when Max passed away and "sees" Max everywhere... from WWII planes flying overhead to a cool bug in the backyard. We have 1000s of photos of the kids together luckily, or I'm not sure what Nicky would be able to recall all the fun times they had together.
Hannah is more private with her loss. She was nine when her best friend left. She writes poems and stories that explore loss and are very deep. She was also old enough to absorb the emotions that ran through our home while we all lived through the loss of Max.
Andy and I think of Max everyday - just as we do our earth children. The jagged edges on the hole in our hearts becomes a little smoother each year, but the hole will always be there. That was Max's place.
Thank you for taking the time to read our story, and for your support in our efforts to fund research for kids cancer.
